Guilin’s Hidden Coffee Culture

Guilin Coffee

Lovely fragrances waft into Guilin from the surrounding Sweet Osmanthus trees. The town is known for it’s beautiful and unique scenery. Nestled on the west bank of the Li River, Guilin is covered in lush greenery and sharply rising peaks. Guilin’s gorgeous landscape is a treat for the visual sense, but the it’s the town’s refreshing coffee culture that’s a true treat for the taste buds.



 

Shire Hobbiton Café

Inspired by the epic Lord of the Rings trilogy, two friends opened up Shire Hobbiton Café in hopes of transporting Middle Earth to Guilin. The style is whimsical and fresh, but not kitchy. The owners roast their own beans and serve some of the best strong coffee, pastries and small snacks in town. Located right on the Li River, it is perfect for watching vessels lazily sail down the water highway. Shire Hobbiton is a perfect place to spend a quiet and charming afternoon.

 

Gourmets Coffee Café

Address: Unit1-6, 18 Binjiang Road
Hours: 9:00am – midnight

If you are looking for a coffee house that blends local and international flavor, be sure to check out Gourmets Coffee. Opened by an expat Taiwanese-American man, not only can you expect excellent coffee choices, but might just pick up a tip or two of local sights not listed in tourist books. The place is popular with American tourist and its walls are lined with a beautiful art book collection. Those looking for a taste of the U.S., the café will also enjoy homemade specializes such as pizzas, salads, and classic sandwiches. Stop in for a quick coffee and snack, or stay longer and enjoy the homey atmosphere.

 

Artist Café

Address: 1 Rongyin Road, Xiufeng District. Near Gunanmen
Hours: 10:00am – 8:00pm

While the Artist Café might have been built as a replicate Taiwanese coffee house, the place specializes in authentic Italian coffee and sweet caffeinated drinks. This café is quieter and more reserved than others. Bring along a book, pack your laptop and enjoy the offered wifi or just sit back and people-watch as locals and tourists stroll down Rongyin Road right in front of the café.

 

Sharon’s Café

Address: No1 south of Chuanshan Road, near Chuanshan park.
Hours: 10:00am – 11:00pm

One of the larger and most frequented cafes on the list, Sharon’s Café not only offers the simple cup of coffee, but also has facilities for private parties and small functions. The standard coffee house food fair is found here, along with some unique items. Sharon’s specializes in authentic German food. Fare such as bratwurst and schnitzels are sure to satisfy those with a bigger appetite. Even though the café sees many people a day, the staff are always welcoming and make tourists and locals alike feel right at home.

 

KAYA

Address: 6 Zhonghua Road, Xiufeng District
Hours: 10:00am – 10:00pm
 

Located just minutes from the Guilin’s main city center, KAYA coffee house is a breezy taste of island life. The café was named after a Bob Marley album, and those patrons that come for the coffee, often stay for the live reggae music, frequent art exhibitions and local parties. Popular funk and folk Chinese musicians are mixed in with artists from France and Canada. This Jamaican style house is somehow laidback, lively and very international all at the same time.
