Shennong Stream

Shennong Stream Brilliantly clear water sets this tributary of the Yangtze apart. As it heads south through the Shennongjia Nature Reserve, it covers sixty kilometers before flowing into the Yangtze. The Shennong runs through some treacherous gorges yet the scenery (both natural and manmade) make the risk worthwhile.

At the start of your time on the Shennong, you’ll be taken by an environmental protection boat for a scenic cruise. Then, board one of the local sampans (“peapod boats”), piloted by local Tujia, for the most scenic and natural journey along the river. You’ll find your ship manned by a captain, some boat trackers and a guide. While the captain and the boat trackers work to navigate the river, your guide will narrate the journey, pointing out interesting sights and events.

As you traverse the four natural gorges of the Shennong Stream, you’ll get to see ancient plank roads, the rainbow fountain, aqueous caves and so much more. The absence of an engine means the speed at which you travel will be slower, but you’ll get a more beautiful experience for it. Quietly drifting down the Shennong, you’ll be able to enjoy the songs of the Tujia rowers.
